“The Colorado Academic Standards provide a grade-by-grade road map to help ensure students are successful in college, careers, and life. The visual arts standards in the elementary years focus on General Art knowledge and skills to help create a foundation for artistic study in later years (drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, media arts). In each grade k-5, students explore techniques of various artistic styles, follow simple steps in the creation process, learn how to critique works of art, identify art in the world and daily life, and discover ways that artwork helps people better understand cultures and historical eras.”

The elementary school art standards are:
- Observe and Learn to Comprehend. Use the visual arts to express, communicate, and make meaning. To perceive art involves studying and scrutinizing, and recognizing art.
3. Invent and Discover to Create. Generate works of arts that employ unique ideas, feelings, and values using different media, technologies, styles, and forms of expression. To make art involves creating and inventing art; producing art; and causing art to exist.
4. Relate and Connect to Transfer. Recognize, articulate, and validate the value of the visual arts to lifelong learning and the human experience. To respond to art involves relating to art; thinking about art; attaching meaning to art; reacting to art; personalizing art; and relating art to diverse cultures.
